For the final phase of Lakeview I am accepting applications for alternate project ideas. There are 3 projects to apply for.

1. Photo JournalI want a few people to take high quality pictures of the rest of the class as they complete the final builds of this project and exhibit them. I can provide 1 DSLR camera with another optional. Images will be subject to critique. At left is an example book made by a former student of mine.
Specifics: 5 pictures of each student in the class each week Draft pages and edited images submitted weekly Chronological arrangement in final book will show building, mounting, and exhibition. |
2. Exhibition CurationA group will be in charge of designing the layout of the wall at exhibition. This includes curation of the final projects, fabrication of a sign/labels, and any relevant wall text. These people are ultimately in charge of communicating this design to the class and facilitating its completion. This group will also ensure that all projects have electrical access. At left are some examples of curation I've done in the past. I'd love new ideas as well.
Specifics: Layout map due before Thanksgiving Break 1 large sign (Lakeview) mounted at site Wall text describing project/process, etc. Electrical consideration for projects. ** 3. Environmental AuditWhat was the environmental impact of our project?
The last group will go back through the whole project and catalogue all the material that we used in prototyping and making. They will produce an infographic which summarizes their findings and answers the question of our impact. Specifics: Each member of the group will be responsible for 2 values (wood used, plastic produced, etc.) All the information will be printed on a large infographic (Canva) and exhibited alongside the rest of the project. The group will also produce a report that recommends actions of the class in the future to reduce environmental impact based on their findings. Click the infographic at left for example. |

Sketchup Things
Link to Sketchup App - I prefer using the app because it automatically backs up any work to your account. This is preferable when you are with a partner because it isn't locked in computer and is much easier to share. Though I have experienced some stability issues the good out weighs the bad.
Here are a few of the most helpful Sketchup tutorials I have found.
1. i.materialize.com - For the absolute beginner. Step by step instructions are included to get you started making your first shapes and designs.
2. Help.Sketchup.com - More useful as a reference than as a guide to getting started. If you have a specific question while using the program this is the place.
3. Mastersketchup.com - Very complete pair of videos for starting. Detailed, captioned. Slightly out of date but the mechanics are the same

Some of my Favorite Youtube Project Ideas
Here are some ideas for things you might be interested in for individual project ideas. Each of these channels might give you some good ideas as well.
I see this going a few ways. Maybe 1 person makes a small, 1 sided version of this that is a little simpler. Maybe a few folks team up. One could make the base and one or two could make the obstacles.
There are a few really interesting ideas here. All would be interesting to see and mess with. This is another channel that has a lot of good ideas.
Different idea, but I could see students making video essays like this about a topic they are interested in.

This is an excellent project because it wouldn't take too long, so one could make multiple drafts of stools and try different designs. In fact this whole channel is pretty great.
I've always wanted to try this. The epoxy can be expensive but this just looks like a ton of fun. Using smaller canvases, someone could make multiple drafts or a series of pieces in a couple of colors.
Another example of a type of video essay, but on a different subject. This is a professional example though I think students would make comparable work
