Due 11.7.2022 Questions Here My favorite cutout that I made was of a coffee cup. I bought a cup of coffee and brought it home to take a picture. After, I loaded the picture into Illustrator and traced all the pieces with the pen tool. Once the pieces were traced I could duplicate them to have just the shapes. I used Reflect and Shear to make the shadow of the main cup. Cutting out the shapes on the lasercutter is easy after they have been created in Illustrator. I used different colors of paper in order to show the layers better |

I made a shoe and a cup and decided that I liked the cup better. Because it's a picture that I took personally I think it is more original to me. Additionally the research for the shoes is super sad and I would prefer to spend time talking about a company that does something environmentally positive. I also think that the shadow looks better in the cup.
In this step I learned that Bird Rock makes some deliberate choices to reduce the impact of their industry, which I am proud of. I had a general impression that they did this but after reading about them and comparing them to other coffee companies I am even more impressed. This was significant to me because I drink coffee every day and sometimes wonder if the extra cost for beans from a more conscious company is worth it. I feel more confident now that it is worth it. |

Because I had made a high quality file for the text on Illustrator it was easy to cut out my cardboard draft; I just had to scale up my work and cut again. It took a little work to fit everything onto one piece of cardboard but the pieces came out very crisp.
The hand made parts took a little bit of planning. I used a web app to print my original image at a larger scale to fit on my cardboard piece and then cut out the paper shapes like in the first draft. These became templates for the cardboard which I traced and cut out with exacto knives.

Between my first and second steps I removed the bottom most layer of the stack. This helped me save space and print my picture at a larger scale. Spreading out the individual layers flat for printing takes up a lot of space if there are too many layers. Because the bottom most layer only showed at the opening of the shoe it seemed like a small price to pay. I prefer the image to be as large as possible.

During the research portion of this part of the project I found that the holding company that contains Vans can show you where on earth most of their products come from. Using the map I saw how materials from a single shoe come from all over the world. I sort of knew this was the case but was surprised to learn that all the materials aren't shipped to one place and then assembled; usually each step of the process of making the shoe occurs in different countries. This means that the shoes are shipped around the world again and again as they are made, resulting in huge amounts of waste. I used to think that the most a company could do to reduce it's environmental impact would be to change it's materials but I've since learned that it would be better to minimize how much transportation is involved in some cases.

Prompt 3 Example
Due 11.27.2022 Questions Here My cardboard draft came out just how I wanted. Since I already had a laser cutting file prepared for the base layer and text I just reused that to cut out from a piece of plywood. To cut the rest of the pieces I reused the paper template pieces that I had made for the cardboard draft. I sanded all the pieces and glued them together. For some details I used a wood burner. This made parts like the stitches on the shoe and the Vans logo really stand out. Then, after 2 layers of polyurethane I colored in the text that had been etched by the laser cutter. I added 2 more layers of polyurethane to seal everything. The biggest improvement between drafts was my reduction of waste. For the cardboard version I used more than allowed so I needed to figure out how to fit all my pieces on a smaller amount of plywood. To do this I first cut out my base layer on the laser cutter in the corner of my piece of plywood. This is the biggest piece I needed to cut. Then I arranged all the template pieces for the rest of the project in what was left over. I liked this because it was like a puzzle where I needed to figure out how to get all my pieces to fit on 1 piece of wood. |
I'm most proud of the text. I needed to learn how to warp text and make it flow, which I had never done before. I found a typeface that reminds me of the album art for Black Sabbath's Master of Reality. I can't say whether I prefer making the text by hand or on Illustrator but I do think that the Illustrator version looks more premium.
What I most learned from this step was a particular method for what's called optimization. I learned about this a little bit when I was trying to fit all of my pieces on a fixed size of plywood. After talking with my math teacher, I learned that I was optimizing for size based on the constraint of my plywood size. There exists a certain scale for my project which is the maximum size that I could cut out while still having all my pieces fit on that one piece of plywood and I think I got close to it. Some things that prevented me from perfectly optimizing the size of my project are the reality of losses to wood dust and that I need to leave enough material for me to hold while I'm making cuts, I can't cut right up to the edge of the plywood otherwise it could be dangerous.

Due 12.11.2022
1. Please post the text of your Ritual Reflection/Testimonial (the thing we will record and play at exhibition)
2. Write out slides 2,3 and 4 to be blog post readable. Include any images that were originally in your slides
Slide 2: Choose 1 Deeper Learning Competency and reflect on how you notice it in your work on this project.
Slide 3: Choose 1 Deeper Learning Competency and reflect on how you notice it in your work on this project.
Slide 4: Describe a detail from your project that you are particularly proud of. Include images.
My Testimonial:
I value sustainability, I ride my bike to work every day in order to reduce my dependence on fossil fuels. I limit my consumption of animal based protein because I am unhappy with the waste involved in its production. Little did I know that the shoes on my feet were one of the highest contributors to wasteful production methods and fossil fuel extravagance in my life.
Like many things in a global economy, Vans shoes are created in pieces all over the world using materials from all over the world. Each step of the process in the production of Vans shoes occurs in a different city, the parts are shipped to different factories where the next step occurs. This results in an incredible amount of transportation-related waste. The shoes have traveled thousands of miles before I take a single step in them. Unsurprisingly, this constant shipping happens because labor is cheaper in other parts of the world; to constantly be moving products around ends up saving money for the corporation.
Additionally, the shoes that I have used for so long are made with materials that are almost deliberately destructive. From the glue and rubber used in the souls to the leather which is sourced from factory farms here in the States, every piece of the shoe seems to be made with the least sustainable choice of materials.
I'm unhappy to think that my shoes that might take longer to decompose then I will; that the waste generated by my lifestyle will outlast me. In order for an environment to sustain itself there needs to be a balance between resource use and wastes created. My ritual of wearing Vans shoes creates far more waste than necessary. So I decided to change my ritual. The next time I go to buy another pair of skate shoes they're not going to be Vans.
DLC 1
Work Collaboratively: During this project I learned a bit about working collaboratively during the prototyping process. I had made an example of the project and asked for feedback from peers. They gave me some ideas about how to change it and even though it meant that I would need to start again I used their idea. I learned that by saying yes to suggestions from peers is a good practice because it helps me find new ideas and be more creative.
DLC 2
Learn How to Learn: When writing my article and doing the research I noticed how motivated I felt to do a good job. I have 19 sources in my writing which shows how much effort I put in to accuracy. What was more surprising was that I didn't feel as if I was working hard; I was interested in the topic and had a sense of momentum when finding sources and backing up claims. I think that this is because I wasn't following a traditional research essay model; I just was enjoying the writing process.
